Privacy Policy

Lumen is a local-network app for controlling your LIFX® lights. It was built on a simple principle: your home should keep working whether or not the internet does. Everything Lumen needs to run lives on your own device and your own Wi-Fi network.
This policy explains, in plain language, what Lumen does and does not do with your information.
The short version
- Lumen has no account and no login. You never give us your name, email, or any personal details to use the app.
- We do not collect, store, see, sell, or share your data. There is no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs in the app.
- Lumen talks only to your lights, over your local network. It does not use the LIFX cloud or any server operated by us.
- Your setup stays yours. Your rooms, scenes, and settings are stored on your device and, if you use iCloud, backed up to your private iCloud account, which we cannot access.
Information Lumen does not collect
Lumen has no backend, and we (the developer) receive no information about you or your use of the app. Specifically, Lumen does not collect or transmit to us:
- Names, email addresses, phone numbers, or other contact details.
- Account credentials (there are no accounts).
- Location data.
- Advertising identifiers or any cross-app or cross-site tracking identifiers.
- Usage analytics, behavioural data, or crash logs sent to us.
There are no analytics, advertising, or tracking frameworks of any kind in the app.
Information that stays on your device
To do its job, Lumen stores the following locally on your device (in the app's private storage, shared with the Lumen home-screen widget):
- The lights it has discovered: their names and labels, LIFX serial numbers, and local (LAN) IP addresses.
- Your organisation of those lights: rooms, fixtures (grouped bulbs), scenes, moods, and any automations or schedules you create.
- Small app preferences, such as recently used colours.
This information is used solely to display and control your lights. It never leaves your device except through the optional iCloud backup and manual export described below.
iCloud backup (optional)
If you are signed in to iCloud on your device, Lumen automatically backs up your configuration to your private iCloud account using Apple's iCloud Key-Value Storage. That configuration is your rooms, scenes, fixtures, automations, and the device records listed above (light names, serial numbers, and local IP addresses). This lets your setup restore automatically when you reinstall Lumen or set up a new device.
Important points about this backup:
- It is stored in your own iCloud account, governed by Apple's Privacy Policy and your iCloud settings. We have no access to it.
- It contains your light setup only. It does not contain any account or personal contact information, because Lumen never asks for any.
- You can disable it by turning off iCloud for Lumen in the iOS Settings app, and you can remove the backed-up data by deleting the app while signed in to iCloud.
You can also use Export in Settings to create a backup file that you keep yourself, wherever you choose. That file is created on demand and is entirely under your control.
Local network access
Lumen requires permission to access devices on your local network. This is the core of how the app works: it discovers your LIFX bulbs on your Wi-Fi network and sends control commands (power, colour, brightness, effects) directly to them using the LIFX LAN protocol.
This communication happens only between your device and your lights, on your own network. Lumen does not route any of it through the internet, the LIFX cloud, or any server we operate.
Photos
Lumen includes an optional feature that creates a colour palette from one of your photos. When you use it, you pick a single image using the standard iOS photo picker. Only the image you explicitly choose is handed to Lumen, it is analysed on your device to extract colours, and it is never uploaded or sent anywhere. Lumen does not request access to your full photo library.
Third parties
Lumen does not include third-party advertising, analytics, or tracking services, and it does not share information with any third party.
Lumen controls LIFX lights but does not use the LIFX cloud service or a LIFX account. LIFX® is a trademark of its respective owner; Lumen is an independent app and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by LIFX.
Children's privacy
Lumen does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. It is a general-purpose utility for controlling home lighting.
Data retention and deletion
Because your data lives on your device, you control it. Deleting the Lumen app removes its locally stored data from your device. If you have used the iCloud backup, deleting the app while signed in to iCloud removes that backup as well; you can also manage iCloud storage in the iOS Settings app.
Changes to this policy
If this app changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and revise the effective date above. Because Lumen's design is to keep your data on your device, any future change will be made in keeping with that principle.
